A little AI that lives in your group chats.

magpie joins your iMessage group chats and one-on-one texts. It answers to the name you give it, and a 🤫 on one of its texts quiets it. It can set reminders, make polls and send GIFs. It runs on your own Mac, with your own Claude subscription.

How it feels in a chat

Here it’s called Pip. You name yours when you set it up, and any chat can give it a name of its own. Each chat also picks how much it pipes up: Quiet (only when asked), Helpful (also when it can clearly help) or Chatty (joins in like one of the group).

  • It answers to its name.

    Say “Pip”, reply to one of its texts or @‑mention it, and it answers. In a one-on-one text, every message is for it.

  • Reminders, polls and GIFs.

    Ask it to remind the group of something and it texts the chat at that time. It can make a poll too, or answer with a GIF.

  • A 🤫 quiets it.

    Put a 🤫 on one of its texts and it stops chiming in unasked for a few hours. Say its name and it still answers.

Tapback controls

React to one of its texts with one of these:

  • 🤫: Hush for a few hours
  • 🔊: Speak up again
  • 🤖: Answer this one
  • 🔁: Try that again
  • ❌: Unsend that
  • ❓: What did you mean?

🤖 works on anyone’s message, and 🔊 on any message while it’s hushed. Unsending is up to whoever asked for the text, or the chat’s admins.

What it can do

Its tools come in sets, and you switch each set on or off for each chat. These are the ones it has today.

In the chat

  • Texting

    Texts, inline replies, @‑mentions and tapbacks. Every chat has these.

    Always on

  • Chat history

    Searches the chat’s past messages by meaning or by words, and reads the conversation around one.

  • Reminders

    Texts the chat later when someone asks, once or on repeat, and cancels what’s scheduled.

  • Polls

    Puts a question to the group as a poll, checks where it stands, and votes when asked.

  • GIFs

    Finds a GIF on GIPHY and sends it, when a GIF says it better than words.

    Finds a photo on the web and sends it, when someone wants to see something.

    Searches the web and reads pages, for news, scores, hours and anything else that changes.

  • Flights

    Looks up a flight’s status, delays and gates, or the flights between two airports.

With your own accounts

You set up a Google or Spotify app once. Then each person connects their own account, and these only ever act for whoever asked.

  • Google Calendar

    Sees what’s coming up on your calendar, and adds an event once you 👍 to confirm.

  • Gmail

    Searches and reads your mail, and drafts replies for you to send. One-on-one only.

  • Google Docs

    Reads a doc you can open, by its link, and creates new ones in your Drive.

  • Spotify

    Finds music to share by link, sees what you’re playing, and adds songs to your queue.

Private by design

  • It lives on your Mac.

    It runs on a Mac you own and keeps its database there. It thinks with Claude, on your own subscription, so there’s no magpie service in the middle.

  • You approve every chat.

    A new chat waits for you: it answers nowhere until you let it in. For each chat, you decide how chatty it is and which tools it may use.

  • Friends bring their own accounts.

    When a tool needs someone’s Google or Spotify, it texts them a link to connect it, one-on-one and never in the group. It only acts for whoever asked, and checks before it adds anything to a calendar.

  • You can see why it answered.

    Its web portal shows why it answered, reacted or stayed quiet, message by message. Friends in your chats sign in there too, with a code it texts them, to see their chats.

API keys and account tokens are sealed in a vault whose key lives in your Mac’s Keychain, and they never appear in its prompts or logs.

Coming Many magpies in one chat

One for sorrow, two for joy.

Soon, friends will each be able to bring their own magpie to a group. They’ll recognize each other by their signed contact cards and take turns instead of talking in circles. They’ll hand each other work too: ask for a song, and Sam’s magpie queues it on Sam’s Spotify, with Sam’s own account. A person always gets the last word.

The first piece is already here: each one sends its signed contact card when it joins a chat.

What you need

It reaches Messages through imbridge, which needs System Integrity Protection turned off on that Mac: one more reason to give it a Mac of its own.
